Before you compare barriers: is a barrier even the fix?

The most-repeated advice from people who have actually been flooded isn't a product name. Three questions come before any material comparison:

  1. Where does the water actually come in? If it rises through the slab, the soil or the drains — not through an opening — a surface barrier can't help. That's a drainage, regrading or site-work problem, and money spent on barriers there is wasted.
  2. What happens to rain that falls behind the barrier? Any sealed line needs a pump or a drain on the dry side. Barrier + pump is a system; a barrier alone is half of one.
  3. Is the opening the problem, or the path to it? A trench drain across a sloped driveway sometimes beats any barrier you could put at the garage door.
  4. Is the water standing or moving? Rising, standing water is what every product on this page is designed for. Fast-moving water adds impact loads and debris, shifts anything light (a swollen absorbent bag is close to neutral buoyancy), and changes what any honest supplier will recommend. Say which yours is in the RFQ — it changes our answer.

We sell barriers, not drainage. So when your site photos say "drainage problem," we'll tell you to spend your money there first — that's what the honest version of this guide costs us, and what it's worth to you.

Class by class — including when NOT to buy it

ABS interlocking boxwall

The L-shaped freestanding units: water pressure seals them harder against the ground. No drilling, no rails, deployable on driveways and around whole buildings.

Don't buy it for: heavily broken or steep ground (tube dams cope better), or protection above ~1 m.

TB-BW series specs

Aluminum flood gates (demountable barriers)

Stacked planks between posts across doors, garages, loading docks. The trade standard for defined openings: one measured installation, then minutes to deploy every season after. 6063-T6 profiles with EPDM seals are the class benchmark — ask any supplier for the alloy and seal spec; refusing to name them is a red flag.

Don't buy it for: sites where nothing may be fixed to the structure (choose boxwall), or one-off emergency response (rental/tubes).

TB-AG series specs

FRP composite planks

Pultruded fiberglass planks in the same stacked-plank logic as aluminum — but corrosion-free and non-conductive. The natural spec for coastal, chemical and substation sites where aluminum's only real weakness (long-term corrosion in salt air) matters.

Honest status: this is our newest line, produced order-driven with mould setup per profile. If your project justifies it, register interest and we'll share span and deflection data as testing completes.

Don't buy it for: small one-opening jobs — mould economics need volume.

Water- and air-filled tube dams

PVC tubes you fill on site: the fastest way to protect long runs and uneven ground where rigid barriers can't seal. Store on a pallet, deploy by the hundred metres.

Don't buy it for: narrow doorways (overkill), sites without a fill source and time before the flood arrives, or plans that involve repositioning after filling — a filled tube stays where you set it.

TB-TD series specs

Absorbent flood bags (sandless sandbags)

0.23 kg flat, 20 kg deployed in 3–4 minutes. The consumable layer: leaks, thresholds, gaps under and around hard barriers.

Don't buy it for: salt or brackish water (SAP cores don't activate — coastal buyers pair bags with hard barriers), anything above shin height, fast-moving water (a swollen bag is near neutral buoyancy — current shifts it where sand stays put), or reuse plans (single event by design).

The sandbag question: what "cheaper" actually costs

Sandbags win on purchase price, every time — that's the honest starting point. What the purchase price hides is that you pay most of the cost per flood, not per purchase:

  • Sandbags: cheap bags, but every event costs sand, hours of filling labor, and disposal — floodwater-soaked sand is often contaminated waste you pay to remove. The sand pile itself needs storage space year-round.
  • Reusable barriers (boxwall, gates, tubes): more money once, then each season costs a rinse and a stack. Over repeated flooding the cost per event keeps falling.
  • Absorbent bags sit between: no sand, no filling labor, flat on a shelf until needed — but single-event by design, so they behave like sandbags on reorder and like barriers on labor.

We won't put invented totals on that comparison — labor rates and disposal fees are yours, not ours. But the structure of the math is why buyers who flood more than once rarely buy sand twice: run it for your site before comparing quotes on purchase price alone.

Choose by how you buy

  • Dealers & distributors: start with the consumable (bags) and the no-install line (boxwall) — they sell without site surveys. Add gates when you're ready to handle opening measurements; our RFQ form and measuring guide do most of that work.
  • Contractors & projects: mixed-material is normal — one site often needs gates on openings, boxwall on the perimeter, bags for the drains. One RFQ, one consolidated container.
  • First-time / small buyers: a carton of bags or a boxwall sample kit is the cheap way to judge our quality before a pallet order. Sample fees are credited against your first order.

How the price is built (what we quote and why)

We don't publish list prices — here's what moves the number, so you can read any supplier's quote (including ours) intelligently:

  1. Material class — the table above is roughly the cost order: bags < boxwall < tubes < aluminum < FRP (first order, before mould amortisation).
  2. Quantity tier — carton → pallet → container. Unit price falls at each step; freight per unit falls faster, which is why single-unit retail orders don't work from China.
  3. Configuration — custom-cut planks, corner units, custom colours and moulded logos each add a defined cost, quoted line by line, not "custom = expensive".
  4. Delivery terms — EXW/FOB/CIF/DDP change who carries freight and risk; we quote whichever you name.

Which single product covers everything?

None — that's the honest answer and the reason this guide exists. Every "universal" flood product trades away performance somewhere. Match the material to the failure point.

Aluminum vs FRP — which should I spec?

Inland and standard sites: aluminum, proven and cheaper per opening. Salt air, chemical exposure, electrical infrastructure: FRP earns its premium over the service life.

Can I mix materials in one container?

Yes — that's the point of our factory pool. Gates, boxwall, tubes and bag cartons consolidate into one shipment with one QC standard.
